Hi,, I think the dogfood recipes are great but I have 13 big dogs and 1 pomerainian,, I have fed the same dogfood for years and all of a sudden this year my dogs went to losing weight and I lost 3 dogs to bloat this year already, have had big dogs all my life and never once lost a dog to bloat,, I tried another food and some of my dogs started throwing up what looked like thier insides, big chunks of bloody meat. I used to cook for my dogs all the time,, mostly meat but sometimes threw in veggies, rice, noodles etc… when my first bluetick hound bloated I spent 1000 to save him,, that put me in debt pretty good, I quit cookin for them then,, thinkin that maybe it was something I was doing wrong, I lost 2 dogs in 2 weeks, when my 3rd dog died of bloat a few weeks ago,, I changed food again. they seem to be gainin some weight back now, I also changed my feeding habits, instead of once a day now I feed smaller portions twice a day. I still live in fear that every day when I come home from work I will find another dog dead in my yard. I dont mind cooking for my dogs but with this many are there recipes that I could cook up to feed them and should I still feed the dry with the cooked food on top like I used to?? I am just so confused and hate living in fear that I will loose another dog.. I have some high dollar dogs here but have more mutts that I have rescued, I love them all and want what is best for them,, they eat 50lbs of dry food in 3 days so I need something that isnt to expensive to cook up,, I would need alot of cans of tuna and many dozens of eggs to feed a recipe like that,, any help would be greatly appreciated.. oh yeah I now feed Diamond brand is that on the list of good or bad foods,, I was feeding Science Diet but it has gotten way to expensive to feed this many dogs.. thanks for your input.. ~TJ~
3 dogs dying from the same thing in a short time… I’d think its food related, either the food you gave them or something that was thrown over the fence. To cook bulk cheaply, try rice, low grade meat (real meat), low cost veggies (brocolli stalks, juicing carrots, outer cabbage leaves etc). If you have growers market in your area, go there and collect the veggies that are to be thrown out or the stalks etc that people generally rip off and leave behind. Save all your eggshells from your own cooking and toss them in too. Cook up in a big pot… if you still find it hard to meet costs, mix it 50-50 with a decent kibble
my boxer has been so sick from bagged dogfood recently. I’m going to try your recipe tonight. I see you love your dog as I do mine. I also have a Shep-lab-rottie mix. Will let you know. Thanks,Deb
That looks like a great recipe.I loved reading the comments.Especially the one from thr Rotty owner who wondered if it would make enough I wonder if owners are really like their dogs.
Anyway my Bella loves the recipe.I never feed her commercial dog food. She has been raised in raw chicken frames and adores them. They probably conatin trace hormones etc but theyre better than commercial stuff.
Soto an Ozzie in the US from a Kiwi in Canada Thank you
andy really loves his pets. If more people cared half as much they to could be spending more time with there pets.I have a 2 year old louisiana leopard hound or catahoula hound. I commend him on his efforts and will be getting the book.down with the corprate dog food what they are doing is sick and wrong… thank you for the enlightenment andy..
Derek …….salt lake city,utah U.S.A.
thanks and you’re welcome!
Andy,
I agree with you about commercial dog food, in fact, most commercial food, human or animal feed.
My comment is your use of a microwave. Please read some of the studies about the molectular changes that occur when food is microwaved. It is dead food that the body does not recognize. Also weight watcher cheese is probably loaded with chemicals that your dog and even your wife doesn’t need.
I’ve read the research on microwaves and while arguments exists for both sides, the science generally supports microwaves as a safe means of cooking food while maintaining nutrient levels. All cooking destroys nutrients, including stove top cooking.
Hello Andy, Just watched your video…the recipe sounds ok. I have been cooking for my girl since her rescue and also feed her Canidae dry food. I must say, I am impresed with your love and concern for pets and their diet. I would suggest you cease using the microwave, tho. Very bad for us all! Keep cooking, and I’d like to see some suggestions on vitamins and minerals. thank you,
Anna from the USA
Andy,
My American Bulldog suffers from mild pancreatitis and was allergic we believe to the protein in his original diet. He is currently on a salmon sweet potato prescriptive formula. Without specific allergy testing I am wary about cooking any food without consulting a nutrionist as to avoid potential bouts of sickness and intestinal inflamation. Are their specific diets for dogs with known allergies or is there a likelihood that his was a reaction to the chemical additives in the food and not the specific protein or gluten for example?
Do you have any salmon recipes I could try? I would assume that it would be expensive to feed my dogs canned salmon!
Dog Food SECRETS now comes with a Special Needs book which includes a recipe for dogs with allergies. We also have our product Canine Allergy SECRETS specifically for allergic dogs. You could try using salmon instead of tuna in this recipe
This is from Jersey, Channel Islands, G. Britain; I’ll try giving the tuna recipe to my
Chihuahua – she’ll be 8 in October, and won’t touch any food sold for animals
hey there i thought that your video was good but i dont think my dogs will eat that maybe my 2 puppies will because they eat anything and maybe my older dog but my other dog i dont really know because hes a fussy eater yes have 4 dogs and i love all to bits! im just wondered about my jack russuel because after hes been neuterd hes gotten nasty with other dogs hes fine wth my other 3 but some reason he dont like big black dogs or even big dogs or sometimes he ok with big dogs but you never know! thanks anyway for my email and the video! i would like the book but i dont know how much it will be because im in uk and also i dont knoe if i can get it sent to me! but anyway thanks and hope ginger is ok and look after your dog well like i will with my 4 dogs. but i still try that recipe with my dogs thank you! oh before i go i would like to try it and i wouldnt want to lose my dogs and they only haveing half there life span thats not fair but anyway i better go and sort my babies out thank you again kelly! xx
Common sense is always a good resource.
I’ve tried this recipe, with some alterations, and my dogs almost inhaled it.
The alterations are: Instead of bread crumbs or bread – I used egg noodles or whole grain rice. I added a pinch of garlic powder (to keep fleas, ticks, etc from bothering them and keep their arteries open) and cooked the concoction in olive oil. Then I gave each of my dogs their multi-vit. I did add a bit of their kibble for bulk to give more calories. Processed dog food does have some elements included that we don’t have in our meals (besides the bad stuff) – but my dogs don’t get the amount they used to. I have varied this menu with chicken, turkey and beef and they seem to like each variety. Adding some liver or kidney once in a while is ok but I don’t like doing this too often. Consider what our liver and kidneys do for us – they filter out the toxins in our bodies and some get stored. So we (or they) eat what was already filtered out. Not real appetizing. The heart is good, tho.
I’m a Registered/licensed Dietitian and I’m as concerned about my 4-legged friends diets as my own. This recipe is a good starting place for imagination and innovation on the part of pet lovers everywhere. Scraps from the table, alone, do not do our friends justice. The diet needs to contain all the essential elements required to rebuild cells and give strength and energy to do what needs to be done. (scraps are like snacks – too much is not good). My dogs get 2 meals (2/3 daily requirements in am and 1/3 in pm) a day so what they eat gets processed and not stored as fat. Grazing is the best way to control weight – if the grazing is quality not quantity.
By the way – eggs have been given a bad reputation. Eggs are considered to be the most pure form of protein available. The amount of cholesterol in the yolk is so much less than what you get in the bacon that goes with it that including egg in your pets diets provides some essential nutrients that will make up for what is missed in processed dog food. I give one egg per dog per day – along with other protein types. But, be careful you don’t overload their kidneys with too much protein. That can be problematic of itself. Oh – also give less at the evening meal so there is enough kcal to do repair work but not so much to be stored as fat. We all burn more kcals early in the day and slow down in the evening.
Didn’t mean to pontificate but felt this might be of interest to some. We learn from each other.
Great post — using imagination and innovation to make the recipes the way you like them is absolutely something I encourage (be sure your additions follow healthy guidelines)
Is there any safe store or vet brands out there? I have 4 terriers? Thats alot of work for me.
Hi, I sold holistic dog food at dog shows for about three years for Canine Caviar so I know how important dog foods can be, and the pit falls. I often give speeches in dog food ailes about feeding natural. But often fall into the old habit of buying dog food for the convienence.
BUT I just recently rescued a Border Collie who will not eat commercial dog food, so I cook for her, and said after this bag is gone I will cook for all 4 dogs. I made a big pot of stew for my family with the idea that the left overs would be for the dogs. But the guys ate three quarters of it. Anyway I am glad I fould your web site and bought the Gold package so we have more of a variety.
ONE QUESTION: Is Canine Caviar on the good list of dog food??
no its not, but its also one we didnt examine… there are thousands of brands out there
My daughter and I were so shocked when we saw your initial video about what is in commercial dog food. We have been telling all our friends about it so as to re-educate them and save our pets lives. Thank you so much we are ordering your book immediatly!
hope you find it helpful — you get all new Edition releases (now on edition 4) free
Great recipe…thanks for caring and sharing…will be looking to get this book…Out whippets will love it
I just lost my precious bett-cee to cancer and and been doing some research on dogs food that has alarmed me to the danger of processed dog food. The articles i have read are like reading a horror story.I was shocked to find out that shelters that euthnize animials actually sell the carcusses to dog food companies that actually use them in their food.
Some of the animials are sick, rabied and the drugs they use to euthnize
can never be processed out of the food. This is like a death sentence for our babies.
Dog Food SECRETS now comes with a Special Needs book that has a cancer recipe. We also have our product Canine Cancer SECRETS which we believe is the best canine cancer info product available anwhere
i have a puppy chow,so do you have any special recipes for a puppy chow?
yes, Dog Food SECRETS has 4 puppy recipes.
i had a 18 month old rottweiler nasedo who i loved dearly i always bought pedigree and alpo dog foods he was up to date on all shots akc registered.he was 102 lbs a beast.great with the kids.well he kept getting these sores on his paws and these missing fur spots on his elbows and the sides of his legs.i took him to the local vet and they told me it was a skin disease they prescribed some pain meds and a antibotic after meds were done there was a slight difference but not much.within a week and a half from visiting the vet i noticed he was moping around and lost like 20 lbs in two day.and he was bleeding dark red blood from his anus.i took him to a different vet and the vet said he had parvo his temp was 107.the vet said he could try to save him but it would cost a hundred dollars a day and chances were he would die anyways.and if he lived he wouldnt be the same dog cuz of his tempature probally already fried his brain some.i was devistated cried for days.well other friends of mine said that they took there dog to get a regular check up from that same vet and there dog died two weeks later.so i thought for awhile it was the vet cuz they weren’t that clean of a place and you can tell they dont properly sanatize there lobby and rooms.but after reading your email i think it could have been a skin rash that wasnt properly taken care of and the dog food ive been giving him since i got nasedo.i dont want the same thing to happend to nakita my female that he left preganet or the puppy im keeping.so any recipes you could send me or dogfood brands thats safe i would greatly appreciate.plus i use to work for a industrial cleaning service.we use to clean out all the product tanks in factorys with a waterblaster and vac trucks.i was trained in chemical work rescue trained ect..well one of the companies we worked for was alpharma wich they make dog food and dog vitimans.we cleaned out the mixing tanks and raw product tanks. o my god you wouldnt beleive the smell of the tanks and the looks of the raw product it was like cleaning a huge vat of throw up.and because of the chemicals in the place we were required to wear chemical suits.so if there so harmfull we cant touch them i know i dont want my dog eating them.so could you please send me some recipes for nakita my german rott that will help with skin coat flaky dry coat .and dry cracking paws and missing fur around the elbows.which is common in rotts.i want her to be the healthiest rottweiler she can be thank you so much sincerly your friend johnny
johnny, I used to work in an abattoir and they also had giant vat for collecting cast offs etc for dog food production… to this day it is still the most disgusting, vomit inducing thing I’ve ever seen or smelled in my life — truly horrific
I just read the e-mail last night about pet food, I knew the grocery store food was junk, but I didn’t think it was that bad. I have a 6 month old rott that I feed wolf cub by Solid Gold is this food on the bad list? Also I have two cats that have been eating calif natural for4 years. I thought that was a good food. So anyway thanks for the recipies, I’m going to try them for Beto even though he already gets good table food from my 3 kids
thanks for the info about comm dog food..
i will try tuna recipe for my jack russel bijou look forward to more advise
Wow that looks great! I actually just got a new dog yesterday and I was looking for a good meal plan for her. I always thought making the dog was a little too much but that just looks quick and easy and to be honest I’ve made several breakfasts just like that for myself over the years, so its good to know its good for my dog as well.
I to am in a financial situation. it is so hard to know that there is good comertial dog food out there but cannot do anything about it.My story is I lost my best and only friend (keeska) purbread alaskan malamute to diabeties and other complications. as you know having your best die in your arms was unbearable. now i am looking for my next friend and don’t want to make the same mistakes. help
yes, its very sad to lose a dog. Dog Food SECRETS come with a Special Needs book which has a recipe for diabetic dogs. Canine Diabetic SECRETS is also a future project (I’ve already written the main book)
G’day Andy. Top stuff to see a fellow animal caring Aussie. (Doin’ ok in the USA too by the looks of it.) My Red Heeler died only 2 weeks ago but I reckon he could have had a better crack at the wicket had I known some of this info. I think it’s easy to see now why all of my dogs have always preferred left overs to that canned rubbish. Never again will I ever feed a can of dog food to a beloved pet. I am actually searching the net right now for breeders for a new Heeler pup. I look forward to receiving your recipes, etc in the mail soon to spoil my next best mate. Thanks mate. Cape York Peninsula, FNQ, Aus.
you’re welcome mate
Looking forward to see if Sandy will like the recipe.
Ray
Thank You, and I’m looking forward to more recipes!
Carrie Burton
opps thats actually cat excrament not her own..
thanks andy..its ok us men dont need you to show the pan.its perfectly plain what your doing.of coarse thats why most chefs are men.
i found the whole site very interesting,to start i thought you an aussie but then you are on about america.being english it doesnt suprise me what LA does with its road kill but i belive its alot differant over here.probably still have additives and preservatives but all pet food here has to be fit for human consuption does it not?or am i just believing the marketing manta
ps…our dog loves cheese, tuna, eggs and its own excriment.but ill leave that out.lmao
good to get some support from the guys on my cooking showmanship (or lack of) — good idea to leave the cat poo out!
thanks for the info. I really would like to know more about what u have found and will look into your books. but were u talking about the can food only or should I be worried about the dry food as well, and what kind of dry food would be good for my dog major? and I have 2 cats, should I be worried about there food as well?
dry food is just as bad as wet. I’ve not done the research but I imagine cat food is just as bad since they are made by the same companies
pitch it too the networks dude you’ll clean up!!!!!
that’s so crazy it may just work! — thanks for the confidence craig
Your receipe was very interesting. I have a American Staffordshire Terrior with a big heart for people he loves just greeting them. His name is Lattimore and I been having a hard time in getting him to eat the dry dog foods so at times just try to make meals that would be healthy for him and that he can get his nutrients for his bones calcium, what can you give a dog to provide the calcium which are supposed to be in dry dog foods. I have stayed from products that have corn, wheat, glutens.
You are right what you given your dog is from the heart and not just shaking out the can.
Yes!
I do the same for my Rudy, he’s a black pug , a son to me, He only gets healthy home cooking ,its a shame that more people dont get away from dog food . take care and happy cooking, Trish
I am sure my dog will love recipe, but I have always been told that Japanese spitz should only have 18% protein food per day. The recipe for tuna with cheese seems very high in protein, please advise, due to causing severe skin irritation
this is a question for your vet. there is a variety of thought on how much protein for a dog, some say 85% others say 18%… personally I’ve found about 30-50% protein works well. what most people aren’t aware of is dogs are omnivores and not carnivores
Really opened my eyes, I told my mother if I could of had my baby SHilo longer it would of been worth it my heart is broken every day, I have a new love Maggie she will love me cooking for her, I am buying the cook books from you soon. No more dog food in the bag.
Thanks,
Paula
Years ago I worked at packing house. They sent out cows uters ,and who knows what else to dog food companys ( Green Bay , Wisconsin ). I know for a fact , they waist very little . Some go’s to soap , some to the leather industry, others I couldn’t tell you. If youv’e ever read The Jungle , you can understand of what has happened in the past ,is also happening in the present .Only now our pets are the Victims. The Industys do not like waisting any thing , thats why so many people have been hurt over the years. LJN
does dogs not have to have dry dog food for there teeth i had a wheaton did not like me brush his teath how do you keep there teeth clean if your dog does not you brush them
nylabones or other chew toys, dental chews, toothbrush (never use human toothpaste) all work
try dental chews or chew toys
Thanks for the recipe. I didn’t know you could feed dogs tuna.
Hi Andy,
Thank you so much. We had a beautiful mixed rat terrier and cattle dog named Elijah, and he was really something else. We thought we were taking good care of him. He was only three years old, had some aggression issues.one day we took him for a ride and he would not come back into the house. He walked all around in the snow and dropped over dead. We are still devastated and looked for answers, blaming us, the vet for the neutering, some kind of virus, and everything else. You finally gave us closure. We now have a little eight week old Australian Cattle dog named Dingo. And HE will be around for a long time. Thank you for so much. Carolyn
if he was walking around and then suddenly dropped dead it was probably heart disease which is symptomatic of a poor diet
I just got done watching your video. Yes I would like to make my dogs happy. Love to hear from you. I enjoy all your tips and e-mails, keep them coming. Love from glenda, buddy, chrissy, and rudy, (me and my dogs)
Andy i have a 8k. a old puppy Yorkie/shihtzu I don’t now what to

having lost my staffie a day ago and then finding your website i feel absolutely disgusted and heartbroken that i may have been the cause of his death at 12 years due to cancer of the spleen because i thought what i was feeding him was the best food he could get,I still have one staffie bitch called bella and she will be better looked after from now on, thanks for the insight but we really should have expected nothing less from people who put greed and profit before human ethics or animal ethics!!!!!!!
Without dry dog food, what do you give Ginger to keep her teeth clean? Also, as others have asked, how do you decide portions & how do you know that she is getting all the nutrients she needs? I appreciate your efforts to keep your dog healthier. There is no companion like a dog & keeping them alive & healthy for longer is the best gift to us & them.
Hey Andy..Thanks for the tuna and cheese recipe..Starting to cook for my dog Denver..Shes a Jack Russell Pug mix.I love her and dont want anything to happen to her.Only problem she needs to lose some weight..Any diet recipe that would be easy to make that you think she would like?.Anyways wanted to let you know I live in hawaii and thank you for the love…Aloha..
Hi Andy,
Your info on commercial dog food is disturbing. What alternatives are available for those who lack the time to cook for their pets. Have you ever considered marketing your own brand of dog food?
Dog Food SECRETS Gold comes with a special report which profiles 9 brands I recommend (only we could find that met our criteria). I’ve been asked many times about doing my own dog food but not taken beyond an idea
I feed my dog raw ground turkey with a product called Dinovite. Also he eats tuna, egg, cheese. I do not think in the wild he would be eating cooked foods. I also pick up fresh killed squirrels and rabbits. He loves those the best. He will not eat anything that is not a fresh kill. He eats all of the animal from head to tail. He has a very shiney coat and is 10 months old and doing great.
Hi Andy,
Thank you for the info. I would also like to share about MVP (minerals, vitamins, probiotics) that I use. It is a flax base supplement. Check it out on K9challengesupplements.com Fantastic product!
Dog Food SECRETS now comes with a Homemade Canine Supplement Guide for easy to make cheap supp recipes
First of all, thank you for taking the time to do something about the nutrition of our dogs. It takes courage to pick yourself up from loss and fight back in others’ stead. I’ve always thought packaged dog food was bad, and wanted to give my dogs something better- but I never knew what sorts of foods would be safe for them. After seeing this recipe I’m very excited. It’s t-minus 2 days and counting to payday with practically no food in the house- but I actually have those ingredients. So I’m going to try it out as soon as I’m done posting this. I hope my Leslie- lab/pit mix will benefit from better food. She is just under 2 years old and already has clouded eyes and a very sensative stomach. My brittany spaniel, Zaazu- well, he’ll probably eat anything anyway. I look forward to your next email! Keep on keepin’ on, and thank you.
Love your idea, my only concern is that I have 3 doberman pinschers so what would their portions be and how expensive will it be monthly to keep them fed properly. Now it cost me about 120. 00 per month to keep them fed on a high end kibble.
Thanks for your time,
Diane
Our books have recipe breakdowns by calorie as well as calorie requirement charts for dogs by weight
I cooked the tuna recipie for my shepherd and border collie this afternoon they both loved it. I used plain label tuna in oil as i very often give it to my dogs with boiled rice. It certainly is very economical and yummy. I tasted it myself.
My mistake about Califormia Natural Dry food not being on the list of “good” dog food> It is but it is made by Netura. I hadn’t realized that. Thanks. My 5 cats also eat California Natural food. I have made the first recipe but made it with pkg. salmon and brown rice and regular sharp cheese and large eggs rather than the tuna and whole wheat bread in the recipe. As I calculate the calorie count comes to about 359 calories per cup. Not bad when Wellness brand dry weight loss/maintance dog food is 325 calories per cup. I am in the process of trying to find out the calorie count per cup for Calif. Natural dry foods. I don’t think they would let you cook on a show on Animal Plant because most of the ads are paid for by Pet Food Companys NOT on the list of “good” food. Go on the Food Cannel!. “Ten Minute Meals for Dogs”.
I enjoyed the show and the answers. Sometimes laughed out loud , at the remarks. We all need to laugh more . The dog that cleared the room was one I enjoyed. I am a believer in healthy food . I am 77 years young. I am on no medication. My husband is healthy also. So far so good. my golden retrievers. are healthy. I havent cooked for them howeverI mix rice and other of our dishes in their food.Feed sassey whom is having puppies. cottage cheese and eggs. mixed in with her puppy chow.I red where the puppy chow has the vitamins that she needs. How did purina rate on the food chart.I heard you mention. My first femail in 1996 got the continamated food and was 10 months old, died in four days. We had taken her off the puppy chow and fed her I’ams. For only about 1 week.tues she played fetch in the yard, and by friday morning she died. all her teeth got loose on thursday.missy weighed 57 lbs. I was very distubed to hear that dog food is still unsafe.I am only using purina. Kathryn
purina is not on our recommended list Miss Kathryn
Andy, I am SO glad to see you getting the word out about what so many people feed their beloved companions. I am dogless at this time, for the first time in over 20 years, much to my heartbreak. I had a beautiful, great and stocky, and quite “alpha” male Bordercollie that used to stand on his back legs and hug me all the time and would sleep on the floor next to my bed each night. During the night I would feel the bed bounce and it would be him just checking on me, he would lay next to me a few minutes, then go back to his bed. My other “guy” was a loving and spunky little Pom, who THOUGHT he was a great stocky alpha male, LOL! AND was a sweet angel! They were ALWAYS fed home cooked food and were beautiful, healthy and had lovely coats. I used brown or white rice instead of the bread, which they liked better and I would make a stock with some peas, carrots and such to add with the egg, rice, meat,1TB Olive oil mix. They thought they were dining downtown! I cooked 2 batches a week and then just heated the stock and poured it on and mixed in their bowls when it was time for feeding. I can in truth say that their beauty and health were from good food. The canned food has more water than food as well, so giving them what I ate was far more nutritious. Thank you for enlightening people who love the pets. It is the least we can do for the unconditional love they give us. GREAT job Andy!
Thanks Cher, rice is a great alternative to bread
Since 1985 I have had 3 Alaskan Malamutes. Dearly loved! With me when ever I could get away with taking them somewhere etc. Great fun in the snow and out. I was given my first one when she was almoat 2 years old. She developed cancer in her right front foot at 5 1/2 years old. I made the painful decision to have her shoulder and leg removed to save her. She did well but the cancer had spread to her lungs anyway. She had to be “put down” at 6 1/2 years old. After all she had been through. Alot of my heart went with her. My second Malamute at bought at 8 weeks old. I had smoked for 40 years until I brought her into the house. I quite because of her. I wanted her healthy. I wouldn’t smoke around her. (good of me and good for her) She grew to be a beautiful 90 lb. dog. Her name was Lakota. That is the Sioux word meaning “Friend”. At three 1/2 she fell over one hot summer day and I rushed her to the vet only to find out she was dyeing from an auto-imune disorder called (sudden onset) Evans Syndrome. Her platelets and red cells were being destroyed .She was bleeding to death and there was nothing they could do to save her. Again I had to make the decision to “put down” my best freind so she wouldn’t suffer longer. I now have another Malamute female, registered as “Calls the Wind Mariah”. She is from the same line as the last girl “Lakota “(I was told Evans Syndrome isn’t necessarly genetic. The breeder claimed her line didn’t have it. I believed her. I don’t think (now) that she was telling the truth about her line not have auto-imnue disorders in it). I am concerned about the girl I have now!!! Yes I have testing done on her and all seems Ok but—. She is 4 1/2 at this time . I want to do all I can for her to be happy and healthy and stay with me as long as possible. We are a team! I have been feeding her California Natural dry food since the pet food recall 1 1/2 years (?) ago. Before that she ate Purina Pro Plan ( that is what her breeder feeds her dogs). Neither of these foods appear on your list of “safe” foods. Could you please tell me why California Natural isn’t on the list? I thought it is “all natural” top quility food. It sure cost enough. I am seriously considering changing her to Wellness brand. And I bought your Gold Plan books and Dog Food Secerats book. I’ll look to see what it says in there also. She tends to gain weight easy so she only get 3/4 cups dry food with 1 cup defrosted frozen green beans twice a day plus training treats ( I really try to not give them but—we do “train” play alot and what can I say? Malamutes LOVE food). I am going to stay making her treats rather then buy them. She weighs anywhere from 75-80 lb. (80 being over weight). She is 24 inches at her shoulders. We are out in the snow in the winter alot. She doesn’t do dog shows anymore as she is already a champion and then I had her spayed. No she doesn’t get as much running etc. as she should because I’m 62 years old and really can’t keep up with her but I try. She had pulled a dog sled but hasn’t in a year. I need to know how much of this home made food she should have. I will not have a hungry dog. But I don’t want her over weight either. And will she be getting enough vitimans etc. for a breed like the Malamute? She doesn’t live outside. In fact she has her own room inside with a dog door to outside. I even filter her drinking water. I do it for me and my cats . Makes sence to do it for her also!!! I have fed her packaged people salmon and canned salmon. She really likes it but it is fating. You have my e-mail address. Please get back to me. Yeas! you should try to have a “cooking “show on Animal Planet.
I think you may have some of the luckiest (and healthiest!) pets in the world, well done on a great care ethic!
I like it…thanks for sharing. Hello from Diomede, AK!
I agree – Animal Planet should take you up on the Cooking show! To repeat a question = Based on weight and size what is a serving size? I’m convinced food can be the culprit. My Lhasa Apso is just 2 years old {25 lbs} and Buster is my best friend. He has become less active recently and is licking his paws constantly and sctratching all the time. Vet says to shampoo him weekly with special shampoo but I am also going to try cooking his food. Makes sense to me too. You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to know you are telling the truth.
Thanks a million, Debra
thanks deb, you’d be surprised how often I get called a scam-artist etc…. it gets tiresome, so thanks very much for the support
Is your dog regular with the different recipes being used? If I change my dogs’ food they get loose stools.
Thank you for receipe vid. Have always cooked for my Jack Russell which has usually been a good quality chicken with pasta or rice and veg. After nearly fourteen years he does get a bit bored with it so is good to try out different receipe’s. I do have to take into consideration he get colitus bad but by now do know what he can and can’t eat. Well done and I agree it is good where possible to cook with love – goes down much better..
Linda these recipes have not been designed for dogs with diabetes so you should please consult your vet.
Andy,
My,basset hound,Deuce is diabetic(two insulin shots daily) are your
meals good for him? Or should I just ask his vet????
Linda..Ohio
hey andy, thanks for your video, i used to cook for macey when i first got her, and i used to buy her a fair bit of chicken, and then we found out she was allergic to chicken, so we tried all these different dried dog foods but she doesnt seem to eat them, i usually feed her my dinner, i was just reading one of the posts above and anne’s one from 25th of march, my dog has the same disturbance and the vet said exactly the same thing, she is now on antibiotics and i have to bath her a few times a week in dermcare pyohex medicated foam, it says on the back that it is formulated to remove dirt and scale, degrease the skin and kill cutaneous micro-organisms whcih primarily or secondarily cause dermatitis, i have dermatitis, im not on antibiotics or i dont have a special derma cream and im ok. that would have to be the first time i actually read the back label of this medicated foam, i just listen to what the vet says and pay the bills, they are vet’s, they shouldn’t scam us. last week i got jipped $220 for a 15 minute consultation, so i think id much rather buy your book and know what im actually feeding my dog, than to have to go to the vet’s everytime macey gets a reaction and be a bit curious as to why she is getting these symptoms, the only difference is even tho my vet said it was seasonal why did she skip two years, as it is specified on his records? thanks again
hi will stay in contact wit you Andy becouse i cook evry day fresh food for my (baby) hasky the are very fassy on food and do not heat jonky food beilive me
I wish to know how much do you feed at a meal for the Terrier Tuna.
Thanks
I have a 50 kilo white american boxer, Zac – & a staffy, FartyBella. They are both 7. Three years ago, Zac had a cancerous lump removed, & Bella continued as her name implies. I accidentally found your site, then saved & purchased the gold Package & have cooked for them ever since.
Zac’s health has improved & Bella NO LONGER HAS ALIMENTARY PROBLEMS THAT USED TO CLEAR A ROOM!
Heartfelt thanks – & to your wife, who allows you to be “shared” with people who are now your avid devotees.
Godloveyou for your care – & for waking people up to the unknown horrors of 20th c “accepted” protocols regarding their beloved animals.
Manda, Zac’n'Bella in Australia.
PS: Next video, add ginger enjoying the result of your labours of love!
Excellent recipe. I’ve tried it on my little Jack Russell. She loves it but because she doesn’t normally have home prepared food I find she cannot eat more than about one third of the meal at one time. She obviously gets full very fast!
Thanks so much for this!
You’re a cutie, and so obviously dedicated to health. But please! don’t EVER put any kind of plastic in the microwave!!!! Only use glass or ceramic. Plastic is not a stabile medium and the chemicals it’s composed of are released when heated; even briefly. Manufacturers promote microwave safe plastic “zap and serve” containers, but they release dangerous chemicals into the food we and are pets eat.
Well done! What you’re doing is excellent, and, while you had the pain of losing your own beloved dog, now you have the satisfaction of helping to save so many others. Dana (my new 3-month-old golden retriever pup) and I send our gratitude. She licked the bowl clean and stood looking up at me for more.
We used to cook all our dog Sindy’s food for her.
She definitely loved the buzz of sitting down by the cooker while we made her dinner for her. On the two occasions she did eat ‘dog food’ she looked at you waiting for her real meal.
After she passed on it was recommended by a dog trainer to get Ellie (our shepard) onto pedigree dry complete foods – she definitely didn’t get such a thrill out of feeding time! After seeing this I’ll definitely be making a move back to cooking meals for my 3 terrier/pom crosses (^_^)
Thank you so much for re-instilling my faith in our initial feeding regime! I far preferred living by the ‘if i can’t eat it, she won’t eat it’ rule!!
hello! i never cooked dog food for my dogs, just give ‘em raw meaty food, but i’ll try your recipe , just for a “snack” i promise !
best regards from a frenchie
Andy L I do not feed my dog canned food, the dog food I purchase for my dog is free of preservatives and has real meat and Chicken and vegetables and Pasta and Rice and she loves it I have made this before fore my dog and she loves my recipe which is I think much healthier than yours. Do you realize that you should not dive bread to your dog as it takes to long to digest and can cause stomach problems I use pasta or Rice in the meals I cook for my dog which I do as an alternative to the processed food she gets occasionally, I must be doing something right as she is a perfect weight, very healthy, very energetic get exercised upt three times per day everyday. Also another thing you should not give your dog to many eggs either they are not good for their heart, they also should get a good quantity of dry food everyday as well. thank you for allowing me to make these comments.
Thanks for the demo.
I do cook chickens for my dogs they get 1/2 each and a cup of dry food… and the occasional can….but no more after hearing whats in a can.
Will be trying out your tuna and cheese and I know they both will love me for it all the things they love
Thanks again
Ali
Hi Andy…
Well, I just skimmed through some of the replies left. AND I MUST SAY that they are a little inconsiderate. For the fact that you have supplied recipes without us purchasing the book; as like me – purchasing my puppy in the next few days EXTREMELY pricey$$$ and can not afford to get the book yet – AND they do not appreciate you or your passion for cCARING for your dog AND THEIRS with the information you have supplied us with. One example being… i knew dog food was bad – but not that bad. I just had to have my dog put down a week ago – my bestest and most loving treasured being in my life – THank god i buried her with me at home; i questioned that as i am renting. Hey im not going anywhere for a while and i talk and sit with her everyday; leave roses and have an angel light just for her.
I am so careful to do exactly the right thing for my new puppy which i am purchasing. Vader, my baby lived until 11 – 12yrs. Ended up with diabetes and quite a LOT of health issues – her life was OVER. I would give anything to have had extra time with her; i will never have a dog like her again.
SO THANK YOU FOR YOUR RECIPES AND YOUR ADVICE. YOU ARE A LEGEND. I LOVE THE WAY YOU ARE SO CARING FOR YOUR ANIMALS. JUST LIKE ME… IF ONLY MORE PEOPLE KNEW ABOUT SUCH INFORMATION LIKE YOU HAVE PROVIDED US WITH… it totally shocked me. and in visiting all the stores etc for a puppy – I just cant stop going on with the fact about dog food. AND I MUST ASK YOU – Does the pet food in quality pet stores… is that f?’:?<N crap too?
Thanks Andy (THE LEGEND!!!)
From Ioanna
Thanks for the recipe Andy. I often cook for my dog Tess, though not every day, using mainly tuna, rice, pasta, liver (small amounts) beef mince and vegetables. Though I’m concerned that she may not get enough essential vitamins, minerals and nutrients in home made recipes.
I will try your recipe later on our two female yorkies. I know they like egg, cheese, bread, chicken and sometimes my fish fingers. Those are the only foods they can keep down.
Thanks for the recipe Andy.
Thankyou again, Michelle
in reply to dianes question i fed it to my rottie (as a snack ) ha ha
what can i say my rottie bud loved it he loves any food to be honest hes a greedy so n so ive always fed him on dried food and it doesnt seem to have done him any harm hes fit n healthy but after watching that video it has made me think twice!!
Dear Andy,
Thank you for the good show that you put on for all of us who love our dogs and don’t feel that canned dog food is safe for our beloved dogs.
I have a little Shih Tzu, and she is a very picky eater. I have to cook her food, and I was very interested in your recipe. I wish that I could have seen what you were making just like Rachel Ray, but I understand that you could not hold the camera and cook, too..lol I loved your show, and I don’t see where I could buy your book or how much it is. It is not on my site, but I am sure that you could tell me.
HI LOOKING TO WRITE AN ARTICLE ON WHAT WE SHOULD FEED OUR DOGS……
SEEMS LIKE EVERYONE JUST HAS THEIR OWN IDEAS.
I HAVE TO SAY THAT PUTTING SOME LOVE INTO YOUR COOKING WAS A REALLY GOOD MOVE, YOU HAVE PROBABLY WON THE HEARTS OF LOTS OF DOG LOVERS.
ALL I CAN SAY IS I AM VERY CONFUSED ABOUT WHAT WE AND OUR DOGS SHOULD BE EATING. THERE IS JUST TOO MUCH IMFORMATION ‘… MADE ME SMILE THOUGH, AND A GOOD ADVERT FOR WEIGHT WATCHERS CHEESE TOO…
Thank you for sharing this video. Would have loved to see the camera on the food. But truly believe my dog will love this.
Liked the video. Agree that the camera needs to be on the food prep and cooking instead of the cooker.
Also agree that this idea should be pitched to the Food Network for a new type of segment.
looks and sounds like a wonderful recipe that my dogs would love but I have 8 dogs and it would be a huge pan full!! will try it anyway when tuna goes on sale! thank you for sharing
I agree with Olivia. You should do a pitch to TV but make it to Animal Planet, not the Food Network, you’d have more viewers. I would watch everyday!!!
My dogs loved the recipe! Ashley 6 yr old mini-poodle, Pepito 1 yr old Chihuahua, and our foster pup Oreo, the Pomchi. We just got her yesterday, and discovered she’s not a Pomchi. She is actually a Domeranian. We are only fostering her for a few weeks. Then she will go to her forever home with my mother in NY state.
Thanks for your emails. They have been very informative. I have been looking for an alternative way to feed my dogs after my in-laws 10 yr old Airdale terrier died of kidney failure 2 yrs ago. I always believed she died a bit too young and now I know why. I will definitely be buying your book in the next week or so. As soon as my tax check gets here. Thanks again!
I will try this nuterious receipe for Madonna, it sounds yummy, thank you
JUST WONDERING, TAKING INTO CONSIDERATION THE BETTER QUALITY OF THIS RECIPE – AS AVERSE TO COMMERCIAL DOG FOOD, ABOUT THE EXTRA EXPENSE INVOLVED…EG FOR THE TUNA, TO START WITH ?
Andy you should pitch a dog-cooking show to the Food Network. I bet you a million dollars it would be successful!
really enjoyed that i belive in every thing you have said i have to white english bull terriers and would be grateful of any food tips you could send my way i feed them chicken and rice and give them raw meat but worry i am not given them what they need i have people telling me i should give them tin food but as like you i am not happy what is in them they are my life and i just wont to do my best for them kind rregareds mark
thanku I would like the recipe for tuna etc for my dog thanku so much sandy
Hi Andy – I agree, it would be nice to see what you were doing… but I got the jest of it… this recipe seems to be packed with protein, but what about the essential vitamins, minerals & nutrients a dog needs as well?
Also, since I’m here… I wanted to ask you something. I lost my job a few months ago and finding it difficult to budget my money… house pmt.; property tax; utility bills; food; dog food… you may know the drill, but these are hard times for many of us… I was wondering if you could find it in your heart to sell me just the Confidential Dog Food Report w/the 9 very best ultra healthy commercial dog food brands? I need this so badly because my labrador retriever Cody is full of lumps and the vet says they are non-cancerous, but my best friends dog, a golden retriever had all these same lumps and got cancer. When the vet went in to remove the tumor on his spleen, they discovered thousands of micro-tumors inside… they said he wouldn’t last the week, so they had to put him down. I am worried about Cody getting sick if I don’t do something quick… and that is to make sure he gets the very best commerical nutrition available. Please Andy, I can’t afford the gold package right now… but I assure you, as soon as I find a job, I will purchase the dog food secrets gold package and then give one of the confidential dog food reports to my friend who lost her dog. She plans on getting another dog some day, and I would like her to become educated on the crappy commerical foods, so she doesn’t repeat the same mistake in feeding her next dog.
I would be much abliged if you could do this. Please respond as soon as you can. Thanks. Cheryl

franz
Hi thanks for the recipe, Idid make my own dog food , but I had to add 3 different types of vitamins ,minerals, and other stuff. Do any of your recipes have to have these additives? I have 2 shih tzus , one will eat anything and is very healthy, the other has itchy problems, right now there eating food with no grains just fruit ,meat and veg, it seems to help yogi.I do toss in a high quality dry food once in a while. They both are healthy dogs except for yogis scratching,it seems to be worse in spring and summer, winter he very rareley scratches so the vet thinks its a seasonal condition. But we love them and make sure there both healthy and comfortable. Thanks Anne
Hey Andy, How does your dog get all the vitamins and minerals it needsZZZZZZ?
Hi Andi, I realy wish I would have known about comercial dogfood sooner. My Dog Schatzie was diagnosed with Bladdercancer two weeks ago. she is on Piroxicam for 10 days now , but I think it is too late. she is in pain. I cook for her a little bit , but she is on R/D I am shure you herd of it. she was starfed for the first 3 years of her life she is a rottweiler and she only weight 57 pounds when i got her . and then she became obise.Thank you for the newsletters and the recepie. I am from Austria and i am trieing to get the greencard, thats why I don” have a Credit card to buy your book. thanks again sencirely irene sullivan
i also agree that next time you should show the pan! but even tho i like the recipe and it so simple and easy!
Wouldn’t it be better given uncooked? I’ve heard that raw food is better for your dog. Thanks!
Looks good, i have a siberian husky and i will try this recipe , thankyou so much!
It’s really nice to see someone who cooks for there dogs. My aunt cooks for her dogs….she has all my life and they are so healthy and fat.haha Take care of your girl and good luck. I have two dogs and they are my children and I love them so. thanks carolyn
please watch knowthecause.com “Doug Kaufmann” ; grains (including bread!), corn, peanuts; fermentied foods (cheese) have systemical mycotoxins (fungus/mold) and cause ALL diesease ! thanks for your passion for our dogs ! God bless and keep you and all whom you love, Nita
Enjoyed the lesson, i don’t think my dog would eat Tuna as he doesn’t like fish at all, and as i live in England i don’t know how much the book would be in our currency or even if i could get it sent to me, but i was very interested, and by the way i have never given my little Shih Tzu dog food myself, he usually eat chicken, liver, heart and kidney from the shop, but i know thats rather a lot of protein and worry about him putting on weight, we rescued him from gypsies when he was about 5 months old, and they were feeding him the worst type of canned food they could have given him, he was blind in one eye, has really weird joints in his back legs and was probably the runt of the litter, but he is absolutely gorgeous and we love him to bits, and i am so pleased after watching your video that he hates canned dog food. Thank you.
Regards, Patricia Stringer. England.
so any dog food dry in stores good for my dog
