hi andrew your right it was good but mt dogs seem to always be hungry and can dog food cause skin condition and thats why my dogs eat cat poo need more protien can,t wait to get your next resipie
hi elizabeth, when dogs eat their own poo it can be a sign they are not getting enough nutrients in their diet. We’ve seen and heard many tales during the years we’ve been teaching dog owners about rapid recovery from skin conditions from a change in diet.
Hi Andy, my 12 weeks old sheltie puppy absolutely loved this meal!! Thank you so mush for the recipe!!!!
Awesome, there’s plenty more great recipes in Dog Food SECRETS
Oh no, I made this recipe for my Shih Tzu’s yesterday and they would not touch it. I tossed it out thismorning. Maybe they are just spoiled as they have been getting home cooked meals of all sorts since they were three months old. What I put together for them always has veggies in it, maybe that was the problem. I am looking forward to trying the next one.
haha… sounds like your Shih Tzu’s are more accustomed to a 5-star menu, thanks for trying it.
HI- I was very interested in what you had to say. My search is for a diet that is low in purines. My 1yr old mini Australian Sheppard developes stones in his bladder because his system can’t break down proteins found in all meats, esp. organ meats. He is a very pickey eater and he walks away from most his meals that I end up throwing away. Can you help me with my problem?
Absolutely the first thing you should do if you haven’t already Susan, is get advice from your vet. If you have and you know which proteins your dog can eat then try these ideas to get him to eat rather than reject his food:
- concern #1 is finding out if his fussiness is health related so visit the vet for a checkup
- if he turns his nose up at the food you give him, don’t immediately place something different in front of him because its training him to be fussy… instead leave it and wait until he’s hungry enough that he’ll eat it
- max of 2 small meals a day because giving more may make your dog appear fussy but in actual fact he’s simply full
- leave your dog to eat in peace, staring can make him uncomfortable
If all else fails try this… put the food in front of him and if he doesn’t begin eating in immediately take it away and throw it in the bin while he watches. Dogs can make an association
of cause and effect if the events occur within 10 seconds of each other, so don’t delay too long. Repeat this process for each meal until he makes the association and begins to chow down the moment his bowl hits the floor.
What about feeding: Liver; beef or chicken, chicken gizzards, dark meat vs white meat chicken, ground turkey?
Hi Pam, all those are good protein sources. There are advantages to some of these proteins, for example, liver is high in certain vitamins and the ground turkey is low in fat. Real chicken gizzards (the muscular secondary stomach used to crush and grind food, often with rocks that have also been purposefully ingested) is also a great protein source.
But be sure “gizzard” is not being used loosely to include all of the digestive tract. And be aware too much liver can cause Vit A toxicity
Tonight I cooked my 4 legged son Tuna/oil, 2 Eggs, Mozzerella Cheese, Green Peas, little bit of Garlic, handful uncooked Oatmeal, Flax Seed & Apple Pieces. He could barely wait for it to cool, then he ate as if he had not eaten before. He loved it and now is resting from a great meal that was packed with great taste and plenty of vitamins. He had his meat, protein, calcium, vegetables, fruit and fiber!
Thats a great meal… he’d probably get more from flaxseed oil rather than straight flaxseeds because they are difficult to digest (I give my dog the oil). Some dogs my even have problems with the oil in which case codliver oil is good.
Andy does one need to add any extra vitamins and minerals when preparing homemade dog food?
Yes, a supplement is a good way to ensure your round off your dog’s requirements completely.
Converting from commercial to homemade food will be a massive boost to your dogs health, supplementing will take them to the highest level of good nutrition.
If you still feed commercial, supplementation is a must.
My bichon won\’t eat fish or cheese, so if I made the recipe it\’d be me who eats it. He loves liver, tolerates hamburger. Do you have any recipes with these ingredients? Last night I used my food processor and put in one egg, small amount of hamburger, salt, some flour and cornmeal for binding. Let it cook in fry pan until brown. He likes variety though so that\’s why I\’m searching for other recipes. Thank you for the recipe I received today from you.
I’m about to release the 4th edition of Dog Food SECRETS which has all new recipes. There is a puppy recipe using liver which can easily be adapted to an adult dog (use a little less protein).
If you order before the release of the 4th Edition, you’ll receive the 4th Edition free when it is released.
In fact, all updates are free forever.
sledge, my jack russell is chanting your name! fair play andy, keep up up the good work!!!!
“An-dy! An-dy! An-dy!” – thanks
I can’t see this being enough for my Golden Retriever and if I had to double the quantity it would be too expensive. What do you think? Dawn
dawn, sardines can be a cheap alternative for the tuna.
I don’t recommend you feed this recipe and nothing else, the main benefits are its simplicity and that nearly everyone probably has these ingredients in the kitchen right now.
Cheap meat, with veg and brown rice is a cheap good meal.
I have a 6 yr old Weimaraner who is constantly getting yeast infections, dirty ears, smelly coat and iching. The vet said her kidney test were elivated and should be on KD Prescription diet dog food which I can’t afford. I found a couple recipes with chichen, Rice & Veggies on line but then also found that rice isn’t good for Weims??? I know Weims can be a breed that can need special care so I’d rather make her food than buy dry food she don’t like that is way over my budget. Can you give me some advice and/or receipe. She (Heidi) loves the food I am making for her and (by the way I use brown rice) Is there a kibble I can buy for her to mix with it to keep her teeth healthier and what about treats.
Thanks so much Betty
my first comment is, with all these allergy-type conditions, I’d say it is without a doubt almost entirely related to diet
if you change to a homemade diet, I think you’d see amazing results within a couple of weeks and maybe complete recovery within a couple of months
I don’t think its true that weimaraners can’t eat rice… I wouldn’t recommend a kibble unless its one of the 9 we profile in the Confidential Dog Food Report which comes with the Dog Food SECRETS Gold Pack because most others are garbage.
best results come with a home diet and frequent vit and min supplementation
try dental chews and chew toys like nylabone for teeth cleaning if you don’t want to get a doggy brush and do it yourself but with the probs your dog has I’d say its very likely she has a good case of gingivitis also
Where is the video folks are talking about? I’d love to find and see it. Thanks for the e-mail with the link for the tuna recipe!! Boo loves it. Actually, I’m thinking of trying it! (without so much bread)
Barbara the video is here: http://www.healthy-k9.com/blog/15/15/
Try brown rice or oats instead of bread.
Hi Andy,
Geat recipe. As my dogs are very large (2×65 kilos and 1x 40 kilos) I add in oatmeal and rice and use sardines as they are cheaper. I don’t feed dairy to anything that’s been weaned (including myself).
Keep the great ideas coming..
3×10 WAGS is 30 from us!
thanks for the tip… sardines are a good idea
Great Kristen, a perfect example of using a recipe as a guideline and adding your own twists… something I openly encourage — well done. If you’re reading this and thinking of doing the same, please don’t unless you know what choices are healthy and safe. After reading Dog Food SECRETS, you would be much more capable to adapt our recipes.
hi andy. i thought i would tell you that i had two little dogs 10 years ago which lived to be 18 years old i believe it was because i fed them food that i made for them. chic.,steak. hamburger, veg\\\’s fruit, some times my family said the dogs ate better then they did. the mom was a chiawawa 18 years old and the daughter was min. collie and died a half year later both where happy & healthy. 10 years ago i got a toy poodel and that is the only type of food i will give her people food. i could never bring my self to give them that STUFF IN A CAN. IT SMELLS thanks for telling everyone about dog food. it\\\’s about time people treated there dog\\\’s like family. helen hogan duncan bc \\\’\\\’please publish\\\’\\\’ thank\\\’s
you’re welcome helen
I have a yorkie 7 yearts old. Never once ate a drop of dog food. I wouldn’t eat that stuff, why should i give it to her. Nothing like homemade.
100% agreement!
It sounds delicous. I can’t wait to serve it up to Honey and Boomer….but…please let me know if this quantity a once a day feeding or twice a day?
it depends on size of your dog and size of the serving. the main book has a calorie breakdown of each recipe and also a calorie chart for dogs by weight
Hi Andy – I found your site whilst look for a Queensland Blue Heeler. Just wondering – you are Australian – I live in Australia – do we have the same problems with decaying carcasses, euthanised animals, cancerous animals etc being incorporated into our dog food here in Australia? I have to say that since I took my dog off commercial dog food approx 3 weeks ago – her coat doesn’t smell doggy at all, its soft as velvet and shiny as satin (English Mastiff x Ridgeback) . Dumb question but is the commercial dry as bad as the wet stuff? Great website and extremely informative. Regards
Jenni
dry and wet can be equally as bad. commercial dog food practices are pretty much the same in all industrialized countries
Hi Genni G
I used to work in Poultry processing and all the guts, heads feathers were in big bins to go for pet food. I will never feed my dogs pet food again, It was a stinking mess and could only be safe to eat for dogs by high heat to kill all the bacteria, which also kills all the nutrients.
Ruth Australian too.
I worked in an abattoir and the pet food vat was incredibly disgusting
thankks sooooooo much i bet my dog will love it he eats everthing
Thank you so much for the recipe, we lost our dog last week at only eight years old she had cancer and was the love of our family, when we get another puppy i am going to put her on this recipe, to give her a better start in life. once again thankyou.
thank you for the recipe, I will try it on my dogs. Lacy my senior dog has diabetis and needs insulin. She sometimes get sick and drinks too much water. She can be a very picky eater. Any suggestions.
you really need to consult a vet on this. [UPDATE: the new release of Dog Food SECRETS now includes a special needs book which has a diabetic recipe
Hi.Got to your website while looking for dog breeders. We lost our maltese age ten recently. was horrified to read about dog food. My daughter had found a website about spot on flea stuff which was also terrible to read. My lovely dog did,nt stand a chance. She never ate tinned food but My Dogs in the foil tray. If i get another dog it will eat what I cook for it and I will use your recipe. Thanks Sue
we have a product about natural flea treatments, its an interview I did with an holistic vet about flea and tick treatments.. it comes with a couple of recipes for homemade flea treatments — very easy and very safe
The food was great! My dog ate it like there was no tomarrow!
Thanks for saving my dogs life!
great to see so many people trying the recipes with success!
I have so worried about the contents of the food my dogs have been eating. I bought one brand and then read on line recently that dogs are dieing from that brand. I am glad to find your recipe to see they can get the necessary nourishment from combining meat, starch and veggies. They can\’t wait to eat in the evening! Thank you.
is it possible to make my rotweiller a vegetarian
its possible but you must be very well planned so to be sure enough protein is provided
sporty likes your recipies glad they are so good for him thanks a lot
Hi Andy, thanks for caring for our precious doggies. I just received a puppy chihuahua/pomeranian mix and is only 4 wks old I immeately started giving him milk replacement and he liked it. But I also soak about 1/4 cp. of Purina puppy chow and let it get soft and feed it with my fingers and loves it. Is this ok? I gave him tuna and wheat bread soaked in the juice and loved it. I think he’s to small to eat anything fried can you give me some advice on what else I could give him.
Dog Food SECRETS now has I think 4 puppy recipes. Most puppy chows are just as crap as the other stuff… choose carefully but there are good ones out there
Really like the recipes, here, especially Heidi’s. I like cooking or just preparing food for my 9 yr.old Lucy (min pin). What makes a happy dog? The time you spend fixin’ there favorite dish. Don’t have no husband, but this is better, than having one. Thanks, to everyone, that responded to K9.
Thanks for the great recipes and ideas.I have been feeding my shih apos and staffordshire terriers(pitt bulls) cheese for quite a while now – its their treat for peeing outside-and have had no problem with it at all (digestion), they love it.As for dog food I only feed my dogs feed from a local feed mill that uses primarily fish-by product and meat-by-product.Is this bad to be feeding them also??And should I be finding out what exactly the meat-by product is??I know that the feed mill doesnt import any of their ingredients because I have talked to them about this, but I am still worried about what might be in the food.Thank-you.
generally I advise to run in the opposite direction when you see meat-byproducts on the label
Great video packed with good information although since the rendering of dog collars and all was discovered in the 1990s, I don’t believe there have any more incidences.
I tried the tuna cheese on my pit bull Sheba because she seemed to have lost her appetite. She ate it all up, but experienced a slight case of diahrrea that evening. I don’t know if it was something that was upsetting her stomach before she ate or not. I’ll cook for her again, but this time I think I’ll introduce it as a mix with her dry food. Pit bulls might be tough, but their stomachs are as weak as a kitten.
changing from a commercial to homemade diet can cause tummy upsets. Dog Food SECRETS now comes with a 4-Week Diet Changeover Guide to make the transition smooth and without incident
Love this recipe. I am hoping that Milo (chihuahua) will be happy with it
Anyone know if this can be frozen for later use? If so how long?
havent tried freezing but should be fine
HOPE YOUR DIETS WORK THEY SOUND GOOD THANK YOU FROM SPORTY AND I TIS GOOD TO SEE PEOPLE CARE OUR PETS MEAN SO MUCH
Thanks so much for your info…however my children have two cats and a little dog around 10 to 12 yrs old, and they shudder to all of the ingredients you list in your recipe. They and I have been educated to know that all dairy products are bad for our animals, and that only babies should drink milk, etc. Also their vet has one of the cats on a special diet, he almost died of a stone in his body/I don’t know if it was a kidney or bladder stone.. They paid around $500.00 to have it removed….he is now spry and bright eyed. It is amazing what a lotta love and a little money can do nowadays. From one who adores her Grandkitties & Granddoggie. Kindest regards, Dolores
Big thanks Andy Ill try it…
A lot of you had ask about different dog foods being good. My dog use to get so sick every spring and summer that she would almost die. I took her to one vet after another. They kept putting her on alergy pills. I finally found a vet that changed everything. She told me not to feed her any dog food that had anyhting artificial in it. She said it wasn’t good for them and didn’t have enough vitamins. I started shopping for dog foods that were like that, and she hasn’t been on any medicine since. That was 3 years ago. Don’t trust foods that just say “all natural” or “organic”. Read the label and make sure it doesn’t have any of the artificial stuff. There are several out there. Racheal Ray and Paul Newman are just a couple. Most are expensive though. So, I’m starting to make my own. That’s why I’m grateful for these recipes. Make sure you still give them vitimins because the homeade recipes you feed them may not have all of tham that they need.
Mary – you cannot feed your dog onions they contain chemicals that could posion/kill your dog.
Have a look at the recipes below (its real good and your dog will wolf it down – believe me.

Thanks for all the great recipes andy (I’m so glad I signed up for emails!!)
thanks for the contribution heidi — she’s right about the onions, they cause canine red bloods cells to hypocrenate and burst. Too much can cause anemia.
chili is actually my sisters’ Minpin. She’s only 11 months but I thought this would get her a really good healthy start. chili eats most everything my sister feeds her. I have a 13 year old Border collie with hip displaysia but is very heavy and has a problem right now with his liver level because of his medication. I hope this recipe will help with his weight. I’ll let you know how this works out for him. I bought the gold package and I am still waiting for it to arrive. I can hardly wait!
DEAR ANDY,
Thank you for the reciepe.Iam sure Buddy will enjoy it.Iam not sure if the cheese will agree with him.Nevertheless, I do’nt mind trying it.Your video was very interesting.I will certainly buy your book in the near future.
Thanks once again.

Mary, a chemical found in onions destroys canine red blood cells. Please don’t feed them to your dog because over time it will lead to anemia

im sure my dog toby will eat it egg cheese and tuna and bread crumbs i would mix that with dog food he is 7 months old he all ready loves pasta vegies, corn carrots and some times he has vegie soup home made he loves my soups and i give toby rice as well.
Dear Andy,
You’ve been helping us dog lovers to make our dogs healthy and happy. I hope you could give more free recipes especially that I am very far, from the Philippines and I could not afford to purchase your books.
Thank you
Joe
More recipes on the way
Thanks for the reciepe, tried it on my 7 months old GSD who usually takes around an hour plus to eat a meal, I increased the amount of the ingredients and it only took him 5 minutes to completely devour the lot and was looking for more. I used the Tuna in oil instead of water and included the egg shells as I always do and used grated cheese. Thanks for the info on commercial foods, I’ve lost a couple of very good dogs at around 8 – 81/2 years of age without any explaination, perhaps you have solved the problem. I would still recommend that raw food be included in his diet (meat, bone etc.) but definately and under no circumstances cooked bones. Thanks again and best wishes.
using tuna in oil for more omega-3 fatty acids and adding shells for calcium is a very good idea
I love what you are doing. My 165 pound Fila had to be put down last May. After reading your info, it could very well be the cause of dog food, although I always cooked for him- I usually added dry food as a filler. Just last month I stopped grieving long enough to take a trip to the local pound.
Every dog there was sooo sick I wanted to take them all, but the scroniest, scruffiest most sickly one of all turned out to be some type of terrier that looks very much like the one on your email. He had been mutalated by a big dog, they did surgery. It was Saturday morning and he was put directly into a kennel where all visitors and their screaming children were allowed to go in & out at will, petting (molesting) the dogs. They said he was possibly nuetered the afternoon before, but they werent sure. We had to get him out of there. He was so sick he could barely lift his head. We had no idea if he had a personality or not. In just a few days, with the help of colloidal silver for the kennel cough, he started coming around. He is the smartest, most obeidient, loving dog I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. They said he is about a year old. I want him to live a long, naturally healthy and happy life. I really beleive in what you are doing and would love to get as many recipies and learn as much about K-9 nutrition as possible. Also, can you tell me what breed he is? He looks just like yours. Much love and success to you. Debra & Donnie
thanks for saving the life of a dog that needed some intensive TLC!
thanks andy for the recipe my jackrussel had all of it when i made it but my yorkie will not touch tuna the only food i can get him to eat is chicken then it as to be cooked fresh or he will not eat that but if any one as any recipes for dogs with chicken it so his food does not get to boring for him it would help thanks anna
A bit disappointed to see you ruined everything by cooking it. I’m sure the millions of years of wolf, dog evolution was only on raw food. So If your getting more years cooked imagine what I can do with raw, the way nature intended it to be. By the way people that are lactose intolerant aren’t when they drink raw unpasteurized milk and cheese. I bet it is the same with dogs. It’s the heating of the milk that turns it from a super food to poison artery clogging stuff.
Whole raw chickens are only 69 cents a pound now on sale and makes great healthy dog food, of course vary the diet with other raw animals and veggies and fruit in small quantities.
Heck one rat terrier can catch enough wild game to feed itself and several dogs for free out in the country. And that wild game has stomachs full of greens.
thanks for your opinion, raw is defnitely a healthier choice than commercial but dogs have been domesticated for 15,000 years and I have concerns about dangerous bacteria found on raw food (I’ve had salmonella… I’d not wish it on my worst enemy let alone my dog)
Hi Stephen I agree totally with your post. I feel that all dogs should eat what nature intended and that as they have become pets it has become convienient for them to eat commercial dog food. All advice about food for humans suggests we eat fresh so it must be the same for dogs. About the dangers of bacteria, freezing takes care of that and lets you buy bulk food when it’s on sale. I mix mine with vege/fruit pulpp from my local organic shop who give it away free (Just like the gut of an animal) full of vitamins. I feed kangaroo as it’s game meat so more natural than protein grown fast for commercial markets but I do use chicken carcass’ and shove the meat-pulp inside the carcass makes a real meal for my dogs and they love it. I add whole tthawed from frozen sardines for omega 3 fats and to add a bit more fat to their diet. I am trying to create a small mammal meal for my dogs This to me is the best way as most city dwellers can’t ffed their dogs a truely natural diet but this is close to one.
cheers Ruth
thanks for your advice ruth. if you are freezing to kill parasites, FDA recommends -20 Celcius (-4 F) for 7 days which is below the lowest temp of most domestic freezers so it is not foolproof method of killing all parasites
Hi Andy, Thank you for the recipe. I have one question…….since I have been advised never to feed dairy products to dogs, due to lactose intolerance problems……is it healthy to feed them cheese? I breed Labradors and Long Coat Chihuahuas and own 6 adult Chihuahuas (at present have 5 Chihuahua puppies on the go) and 4 adult Labradors. I feed my dogs only Hills Science Diet (dry kibble). Is this dog food OK as I cannot afford your book at the moment, but shouldn’t be too long before I can. Thank you in anticipation, Andy, and keep up the wonderful work re healthy diet. I have known for many years the problems that most commercial dog food products cause and agree with you that it is nothing short of criminal that they are still being produced and sold.
Thank you again. I look forward to your reply. Kindest Regards, Gerry
cheese is fine in small amounts and those brands are not on my list of recommended
Thanks for showing me the reacipe Andy! But Lexie, my Border collie died
after you showed me the recipe. I’m dogless but hope fully when I get another dog, I could contact you for the recipe again!!!!
Bye! Sammy = )
Andy I love the concept we just lost our two red Dobes at 8.5 years old. they were such a part of our lives and to think what we gave them to eat could have accelerated their departure is shattering.
dont feel bad, advertising tells us 24/7 we are doing the loving thing by using commercial brands
thanks for the recipe for Cricket , she has become a better little girl since I have started cooking for her . I have no problems getting her to eat which I have heard that some yorkies don’t eat well. Not Cricket she likes the cooked food and I will proably have to watch how much she eats, don’t want to kill her with kindness.
Thank you for giving me that recipe for dogs
thank you
I watched your video and tried this recipe and my tea cup poodle “Alfie” really liked it. I am concerned with his diet, and I have been searching for a real good dog food for him. I have read on the internet that a lot of dog food over the counter are bad for your dog. I do cook for Alfie quite often. Have any suggestions?
Thanks,
Angie B.
Dog Food SECRETS comes with a special report which profiles the 9 brands we recommend
i willtry any advice i’m given to keepmy english bull and staffy happy/content with life cheers mate willtry tomm!
Thanks for the recipe Andy. I would like to ask you about feeding a 11 year old black lab this recipe. She normally eats twice a day 1 1/2 cups each time. I want to know if I would repeat this twice a day.
I also have a 15 month old female Boston Terrier that has food alergies. I am feeding her a hypo allergenic food from out vet’s office. I know protein was mentioned as something she shouldn’t have. Do you have any ideas about what I could feed to her?
Both these dogs eat their own or each others stool. I have tried a couple different things but no luck especailly with the lab. The last thing I tired is called Forbid, suppose make the “stool” taste bad lol, so she will spit it out.
Is it true once this becomes a habit you cannot stop them no matter what?
Lots of questions, hope you can answer a couple of these questions. Thank you Patti Waddell
You could repeat this recipe twice a day but of course it depends on the serving size. I’d not recommend you use this recipe and nothing else because your dog will need some veggies as well.
I can’t see how a dog can survive without protein. I’d ask about the protein again because its most likely just some proteins which are not good.
Dogs often eat poo if they are not getting adequate nutrients from their food, which is almost definitely going to happen if a dog only eats commercial dog food.
There are other reasons, here’s a list I nabbed from Yahoo answers:
1. Your dog might be hungry. If your dog doesn’t have access to food, he might eat poop.
2. Some dogs will eat poop to clean up an area like a housekeeper. This is most likely if your dog is confined to a crate or kennel, or when he’s chained up or otherwise restricted. He’s taking care of his space.
3. If your dog likes to carry poop, and then eat it, it could be genetics. Some dogs have instincts to carry stuff in their mouths.
4. Your dog might be eating poop because of parasites or worms. They can suck nutrients out of your dog, driving him to eat poop. It might also leave him extra hungry because of the lack of proper fuel.
5. Your dog might be eating cat poop or other animal poop to get key nutrients and minerals not available in his own food.
6. Some dogs will simply eat poop to pass the time. Dogs will eat poop because they are bored or lonely. It can be a sign of neglect.
7. Your dog might eat poop because he’s anxious, nervous or otherwise upset. Stress will drive animals to do odd things.
8. Some dogs will eat poop to hide the evidence. If you punish your dog for pooping, he might eat it to stop you from getting angry.
9. If your dog has puppies, she might eat puppy poop. This is an instinct to hide the poop from predators. Poop is evidence. Getting ride of it keeps her puppies safe.
10. Some young dogs and puppies will eat poop as a novelty. That is, they’ll eat poop as an experiment. They don’t know better.
11. If your dog watches you pick up poop, he might learn to do the same. This is called allelomimetic behavior. Your dog observes you and learns from you, by putting the poop in his mouth you put poop in a bag.
12. Your dog might see others dogs eating poop. From this, they learn to eat poop too.
13. Many dogs simply like the taste of poop. This obviously doesn’t make sense to dog owners but that’s irrelevant. Some dog like to eat it and that’s that. It’s warm, moist, and very much like what your dog was given as a very young puppy.
14. If your dog food lacks key nutrients, he might eat poop. Your dog is trying to get “food” with nutrients any way possible, even from his own poop.
15. Sometimes dog poop seems like dog food. This can happen when dog food is low quality and includes materials that are easily passed and not absorbed by your dog. When the dog poops, it seems to be very much like the food he just consumed!
16. In some cases, dogs will eat poop if they are given too much food. This is especially true if your dog’s diet is high in fat.
17. Some dogs will eat poop to gain attention. Many dog owners get very upset when their dog eats poop, which means the dog gets attention. This is a wonderful opportunity for your dog to interact with you, although it is because of negative attention.
18. It is possible that some dogs will eat the poop of other, more dominant dogs. Your dog might be more submissive than other dogs, resulting in strange poop eating behavior. This seems to occur more in households with multiple dogs where dominance and submission is a factor. Obviously this doesn’t explain much about dogs eating cat poop or other animal poop.
19. It is possible that your dog wants to eat more than one time per day. If you only feed your dog once per day, and your dog eats poop, it could be an indication they want to eat more frequently.
20. In some cases, your dog will eat poop by accident. Dogs are curious and will try to eat almost anything, including poop. Dogs explore the world through taste and smell, much more than humans.
Andy, thanks for the free recipe of the tuna, cheese, egg, etc. I have a mini schaunzer, about 12 lbs. I mixed in what I had on hand…a can of green beans, and made a huge skillet of it all. Had white tuna in water, so added some canola oil.
She couldn’t wait for it to cool off, but I did. She scarfed it right down! Bridget is so happy and so am I. I froze most and refridgerated enough for a few days. Tuna recipe in am and still a little Pedigree Dry in pm.
Surprised her breath didn’t smell. Also, small firm poo’s instead of bigger ones…so I guess virtually no waste.
I’ve always known fish was ok for dogs…had an allergic SharPei who was on fish and potato dry food forever.
Can’t afford your whole book..can barely afford to feed myself, and everything in the receipe but eggs & cheese comes from food pantry where I get my own food.
Could you see your way clear to forward a different receipe suitable for her–12 lb. Miniature Schnauzer, 6 yrs old–in training for Pet Therapy work.
Thanks so much!
Grateful in Tampa
Dog Food Secrets 4th edition has ALL new recipes so I’ll be adding more soon.
I just bought the gold package… within a day I read most of the information. It’s worth a 10 out of 10…. It contains everything
that you need to have a healthy dog, and for him, to live longer.
Your recipes are simple to follow ,and mark for caloric intake; which is a very good way to ensure that the dog receive the amount of calories,
he needs everyday…
Thank you for all the researches done about the dog food, it is excellent
information that everybody should have…
Thank you very much Martine!
Dogs loved recipe. Also try brown rice, blended green vegs, 1 tin pilchards (omega 3), sea salt, kelp, 1 pack chicken necks, 1 pack bone meal, or chicken livers or hearts. Dogs lick the bowl clean, shiny coats, way less phoo, less joint pain in the old dogs.Same cost as kibbles.
Well done, great ingredients
Mornin, Andy
Daughter tried the recipe on her two Schnautzers, they nearly ate her arm off for the stuff. We have yet to try it on our three Lhasa Apsos, who at present are fed Royal Canin Sensible dry food, the contents of which are quoted as being made from meat fit for human consumption. On the bags there is no mention of any chemical additives, but one can never tell !!
There is a major loophole which allows chemical preservatives to be added to food but not declared on the packaging. Testing revealed ALL brands (I dont know which ones were in the test) marked as chemical & preservative free did in fact contain them.
Thank you for the enlighting info on the dog food industry. I am going to try the wonderful recipe of tuna, eggs, etc for my babies tonite
Thank you so much for caring
Andy; Things are great here in Tampa. I tried the Terrier Tuna, Egg & Cheese Supreme for my Great Pyrenees, Kyra. I definatelly had to double the ingredients as she weighs 110 pounds, but she thought she had died and gone to Heaven. Well Done! I wish I could afford your book, but right now I have all I can do just to feed her and my six cats.
Hello Andy,
My dog Cooper had parvo when he was just a pup.
This was before I owned him. He had some intestine removed to save his little life. He is almost 3 years old now. When I first got him I was feeding him what I THOUGHT was good dogfood. I
would take my finger to scrape the spoon. Then my finger got red and the skin was like it was burned. Then Cooper got bad sick. I now cook for him and my finger is healing( now that I’m not messing with canned dogfood).
Thank you for the recipe! Cooper and I are greatful for nice and caring people like you.
Peggy & Cooper
Scary isnt it? With part of his intestine removed, its even more important than usual that you use HIGH nutrient food. Dog Food SECRETS now comes with a homemade supplement book so you can boost his nutrient levels cheaply
I am the owner of four dogs about to be five. I have 2 chihuahuas, great pryneese and a rat terrier. They all love eggs of all sorts so im sure they will love it. I have a ? is it realy a good idea to stop all sorts of commercial dog food? can i substitute it on some days my vet is telling me that the type of food i am using is good for them. he has been my vet since i was a little girl. I am confused!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! any answers would be helpful thank you Ali Nickole
its your call Ali but I’ve done a lot of research and few foods are any good… most are garbage. Your vet maybe basing his assumptions on the marketing rather than research
Tried this recipe on Angel this morning, she really loved it. Though your calorie counts and mine weren’t the same for the brands I was using. I have a lot of extra room for extra calories since she’s a Newfoundland puppy. I’m trying the pitbull pasta primavera on all 4 of my dogs tonight.
Thanks for the recipe…I know the girls will love it….Carolyn
hi thanks for the recipe going but i have a 5 month old puppy part jack russell..is this recipe good for my dog? and how much should i give him………
Dog Food SECRETS 4th edition, includes 4 puppy recipes
Thank you Andy , I will try it on my caleb & pachez. I hve been trying some holistic fish &veggies dog food, they do not like it!
I know you keep sending this to me so I will try it on Sadie
gr, will give it a go!
I’m pretty sure that 1 c. whole meal breadcrumbs at 480 calories isn’t just whole wheat bread, crumbled, but I’m not sure what it is. Would you explain, please. Thanks for putting the calorie count in. Most commercial
dog foods don’t tell you how many calories are in a portion. And one last question, how many caalories per day should a 50 lb. dog be eating to lose or mantain her weight. Thanks so much for sharing this. I know Chloe will love it.
Hi Ann, 50lb dog needs about 1400 cals a day.
I try not to be too stringent when making the recipes, treat them as a guide rather than a precise science because that will be enough to provide high quality food that follows calorie requirements
hi jerry, in Dog Food SECRETS how much you should feed your dog according to weight and calories is all explained
the recipe sounds fine, but my dod wieghs 17 lbs,the question i have is how much of this tuna ,and egg creation should i feed ole jack,i dont want him stuffed, and like you said dogs gorge themselves, send more recipe’s,but can you break down the portions per size of dog, thanks jerry
thank you i will try this recipe on my great dane
Salmon is poison to dogs as far as I know … stick with tuna ..
uncooked salmon contains a parasite which can be fatal to a dog, so cook it thoroughly and its fine — sardines is also a good cheap alternative
Thanks for this recipe……..I have a boxer x staffie that we have had for 18months now from the RSPCA, he has been the fussiest eater we have had so far!!! And was very skinny when we took him on. He is such an enormous part of our family & gives us all soooooo much love I just want to give him the best 2nd chance I can!!!
Shadow loves his mealtimes now with recipes like this!!!
Many thanks
Rebecca & Shadow!
Awesome!
Thanks for the recipe. I’m sure my dogs would love it. I agree that most commercial dog foods are not good for dogs and in fact can be very dangerous to their health. However, it appears that you have not done enough research about what IS really healthy for dogs. Tuna can contain a high concentration of Mercury–not healthy for humans or dogs. Many dogs react poorly to wheat, (two of mine are allergic/sensitive to wheat) Cheese is highly fatty, and dairy fat is not the best form of fat for dogs. The types of fat dogs need and receive from raw meat, eggs fish and other carefuly cooked meat is more easily digested and more nutritionally beneficial.
If we want to take nutrition to the nth degree, then yes you are correct. However, the point is a balance between between nutritious and practical. This recipe is much better for a dog than commercial food, hands-down.
Hello andy,
haven’t tried it yet but certainly will when i’m feeling better, this is a great idea for people like me, who can’t afford to buy, please continue to do this, I will highly appreciate it, and may the Lord bless you, and keep you always, Precious sends hi, i will send a photo of precious.
God bless.
Dear Andy,
My Lab, My Sheltie, and my little grey Kitten loved the Terrier Tuna Egg and cheese Supreme. It was so easy and nice and hot.
and They thought they were eating my dinner. Te He he he
I had been buying expensive Dog food at the Vet to avoid the problems accompanied with commercial dog foods.
My pets think you recipe was great and not a threat of their life being lost by some wacko tampering with our precious pets food.
It was another thought beside the processing druged filled animals that are injected into some animals before they died.
The things that go undetected in some of the packaged foods bought at your local grocery chains. Who would know, had someone not being in the know? Thanks for exposing these facts and the recipes.
Hugs and Kisses from me and my pets
JoAnna
you’re welcome JoAnna
Thank you for this recipe… I tried it on my labrador retriever Cody this morning. Needless to say… he loved it. I cut the recipe in half though, using only one egg & 1/8 cheese, and used plain quaker oat meal instead of bread crumbs. Because bread can be fattening to eat everyday, I will periodically substitute it with oat meal or brown rice. I added it in with his dry kibble (Organic Dog Whisperer=Castor & Pollock) to make up for the difference in the amount he needs to eat. I just hope the cheese doesn’t give him loose bowels… lol.
oats is a great substitute, as is brown rice
Thank you I will try this recipe, I thought that bread was bad for dogs, and also wonder about cheese. I have noticed a wonderful improvement in Ginty since she has gone onto a raw meat diet, thanks to you, you got me thinking. Sorry that I am in the U.K.
Great to hear. Bread and cheese are not the healthiest of foods for dogs but the point of this recipe was something fast you can make in the next 5 mins because all the ingredients are probably in your pantry. BTW, Dog Food SECRETS is also available in the UK
Thanks..I’ll try it.
Joe
Thanks a lot for sharing this recipe with me
actually i m owner of a lab puppy (2 months old) and i confused “wts best for her”.
i will try this recipe for sure.
thanks again
Dog Food SECRETS 4th Ed. now includes 4 puppy recipes
I was always told that when you use eggs in a recipe for dogs, it was a good idea to pulverize the egg shells and use them in the recipe too. It gives the dogs extra calcium….
Yes, absolutely egg shells are great
Thanks for the recipe. We have added a new dog to our farm.” Diesel” is a Great Pyrenees/Maremma and is growing quickly. He is 7mos. old and weighs about 70lbs already!!! We had a setback with him when he got kicked by one of the horses and broke his leg in three places. Our Vet put screws and a plate, cast, etc. The cast is off and my wife gives him theraputic massage once a day. We have started both dogs on a home-made diet of Chicken/Turkey parts,Fish Oils,Rice,Cranberry,Veggies. They absolutely LOVE it and we have really noticed a differance in our older dog “Nikki”!!!! ALL ingredients where grown by us (chickens/turkey) or were purchased at Organic stores. If you ever want to prove that DOGs are Man’s best friend just try this. Lock your Wife and your Dog in the trunk of your car, come back a day later and say “Who’s Happy to see Me”!
haha, politically correct maybe not but funny!
Is this god for my dog Lucky he is Bichon Please help me my dog lately start grating his teeth/ way is there a problem ? Thank you ..
Sincerely. Barbara Nawara
It could be stress related from anxiety maybe… this is one for either the vet or a professional animal behaviorist
Hi thanks for the recipe – I will try it on Fejoa tonight
Thanks so much for opening my eyes to what is in dog food. Unfortunately this information came to late to save my two dogs. Roscoe passed away quite unexpectly two weeks ago, and Cleo is suffering from cancer.
I am also researching the raw meat diets that are out there. I want to be a very informed pet owner, for the next dog I get, and will not get another dog until I feel I am very informed.
I really appreciate what you are doing for dogs all across the world. I just hope everyone that loves their pets, listens.
B. Mann
Thanks Bonie!
We now have a product called Canine Cancer SECRETS which we belive is th best information product about dog cancer on the market
need to know if you can tell me how to cook for 30 cats
Cat Food SECRETS is on the drawing boards
Seems like a lot of calories to me. I have a little gal that is fluffy but she
would want to eat it all at once. How big of a helping does it make and how
many meals would it serve?
It comes with a calorie breakdown. All new recipes in 4th Ed of Dog Food SECRETS now show how much a recipe makes for daily cal requirement for toy, small, medium, large and extra large dogs
Thanks for the great receipe Iam sure my dogs will love it
Thanks a lot I’ll try it.By the way Ginger is no longer with us,I now have a Jack Russell Terier.
Hello,
I purchased the bronze package, I believe, and was under the impression I would receive the books in the mail.
Also, the recipe says “whole meal breadcrumbs”. I take it that means “whole wheat” bread. Am I correct?
We are an Eco-Friendly company and follow a nurture-nature policy whcih includes not killing trees, destroying habitats or use of bleaching chemicals all associated with paper production, sorry if you missed that, its well explained on the order page.
Yes about the breadcrumbs
thank you, will give it a try !!!
Thank you Andy.
Is this good for a dog with diabetes?
It should be okay for a diabetic dog but please check with your vet first.
Dog Food SECRETS now comes with a Special Needs book with has a diabetic recipe.
Canine Diabetic SECRETS is also on the drawing board
would like a copy of receipe. thanks
The blog post after this one contains a download for the recipe
Hi Andy,
Thanks for the Recipe.
I thought that tuna was bad for dogs. I had a friend whose dog had a bad reaction to raw tuna and couldn’t breathe and ended up in the emergency .
How much should they get. 1/2 of the recipe with kibble. My dog eats 2 times a day and weighs 40 pounds at 3 years old.
Looking forward to trying it.
Thank you
Judith
Never give raw salmon or tuna to a dog… contains harmful parasites
To get rid of any parasites freeze for a month, human grade fish (and meat) should be alright as it has been screened and deemed free of parasites.
FDA guidelines for freezing fish to kill parasites.
- Freeze and store at -4°F (-20°C) or below for 7 days (total time); or
- Freeze at -31°F (-35°C) or below until solid and store at -31°F (-35°C) or below for 15 hours; or
- Freeze at -31°F (-35°C) or below until solid and store at -4°F (-20°C) or below for 24 hours.
Note: these conditions may not be suitable for freezing particularly large fish (e.g. thicker than six inches) (FDA, 2001)….”
“Fishing can be wonderful recreation, but sharing the catch with your dog
can be an act of kindness that kills. Salmon Poisoning Disease is a
potentially fatal condition seen in dogs that eat certain types of raw fish.
Salmon (salmonid fish) and other anadromous fish (fish that swim upstream to
breed) can be infected with a parasite called Nanophyetus salmincola.
be aware that -4°F (-20°C) is below the lowest temp of typical domestic freezers
Thanks for the recipe. I’m sure my dogs will love it. Could you find it inn your heart to send me some more. I would highly appreciate it. Till we chat again. glenda
will be doing more recipes
I was thrilled to see the recipe that we could download. I can’t afford the recipe book so this was great! I hope you do this again. Thanks, Marie Zapalac
Hi Andy
Thank you so much for the recipe. I am anxious to try it. I will let you know how it goes over with our standard poodle, chocolate lab, and my daughters 2 chiuahuas.

This is a great recipe & I will definately make it for my dogs cause they love eggs, cheese & tuna. But I thought I was supposed to get information about commercial dog food & why it’s bad for my dog? What happened to this???
All that info is on the blog, if you have subscribed to our newsletter, then you will be receiving vids, articles etc all about that
the recipe is good but I would substitute the tuna with salmon and use oat meal instead of bread crumbs other than that I think it is a good one
yes, good substitutes
